Harvey Weinstein’s rape conviction overturned in New York

Time’s Up UK is disappointed with the ruling of the Court of Appeals in New York, which claims Weinstein had not received a fair trial for one of his rape charges. With a 4-3 decision it was clearly closely contested.

However, he will remain in prison as he was also sentenced last year in Los Angeles to 16 years in prison for raping and sexually assaulting an actress in a Beverly Hills Hotel. The Los Angeles conviction is not affected by Thursday’s decision in New York.

The ruling by the Court of Appeals means Weinstein’s accusers could once again be forced to relive their traumas on the witness stand. But we stand alongside our friends Tarana Burke and Anita Hill in their statements that no single legal ruling can ever match the tremendous progress we have made together in the movement against sexual violence, and the movement will persist, driven by the truth of our testimonies. And changes to our systems and culture will follow.
